Joshua Thomas Acker, Ph.D., Ret., Director of Human Resources, Pinellas County Sheriff's Office

Joshua Thomas Acker, Ph.D. is a retired law enforcement officer and currently a licensed mental health professional and consultant. He started out as a deputy sheriff in Patrol Operations and served in many specialized capacities including eight years as a detective and detective corporal. He was responsible for developing and creating the Psychological Services Coordinator role with his agency which he held for a number of years in the dual role as a law enforcement officer and mental health professional. He was promoted to corporal, sergeant, lieutenant, and retired as the Director of Human Resources for the Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office in the Tampa Bay Area of Florida. Dr. Acker has a Master of Science degree in Counseling Psychology and a Ph.D. in Psychology. He is licensed as a counselor in Florida, Delaware, and Illinois. With specialized experience in crisis intervention, suicide prevention, peer support, and stress management, Dr. Acker has a heart for supporting law enforcement officers.

Dr. Acker currently resides in Southeastern Pennsylvania and is the Executive Director of the National Alliance on Mental Illness in Delaware (NAMI Delaware) based in Wilmington, DE. He can be reached at jathomasphd@gmail.com.
