Ellen Kirschman, Ph.D.

Clinical Psychologist

Dr. Ellen Kirschman is a clinical psychologist, consultant, and trainer with over 20 years' experience working with public safety personnel, their agencies, and their families. She has written two books: I Love a Cop: What Police Families Need to Know and I Love a Fire Fighter: What the Family Needs to Know (2004). I Love a Cop was first published in 1997. A revised, post-9/11, post-Katrina edition was released in 2007. It has sold more than 85,000 copies and is used worldwide in police and spousal academies.

Dr. Kirschman is co-founder, along with Dr. Lorraine Greene, of the website, policefamilies.com, funded by a grant from the National Institute of Justice. In 2000 she had the honor to be named Woman of Distinction by the Police Chiefs Spouses Worldwide. In 2002, she completed the Greater Cincinnati Media Fire Academy as part of her research for the firefighter book. She belongs to several organizations: the psychological services sub-section of the International Association of Chiefs of Police; The American Psychological Association (Division 18; Police and Public Safety); The Society for Police and Criminal Psychology; and Women in the Fire Service.

She travels worldwide giving workshops, seminars and keynote speeches. Samples of some of her workshops include: "Bringing it Home: Strengthening Your Police Family - a Workshop for Couples;" "Target Hardening: Self-care Skills for Police Officers;" "The First Responder's First Responder: Creating Effective Family Orientations;" and "Healing Our Protectors: A Workshop for Clinicians Who Treat First Responders."
